A winning return to Dunterlie as ten man Lie come from behind

Arthurlie picked up all three points on Saturday afternoon in front of a home crowd, as we returned to West of Scotland Premier League action against Shotts Bon Accord.  This was the Lie’s first home game since beating Renfrew 3-2 in March, with us looking to make it five league games unbeaten.

Arthurlie made one change to the team that beat Drumchapel 6-0, with Bobby Barr replacing Mark Taylor in the starting eleven.

The home side suffered an early setback as Shotts opened the scoring.  The Lie responded well to the Shotts goal,  with  Ewan McPherson denied by the keeper.

McPherson then latched onto a through ball from Bobby Barr, and this time he made no mistake, grabbing the equaliser for the hosts, meaning the two sides were level going into halftime.

The Lie started the second half with the wind at their back. The hosts started the second 45 well as they searched for a goal to turn the scoreline around. A good chance for the home side soon followed as Max Gillies fired wide, as a powerful run and cross from the skipper Michael MacNeil set up the chance.

We were then reduced to ten men after Bobby Barr was sentoff following a coming together off the ball.

Arthurlie were right up against it as they looked for a winner, but they kept going as chances kept coming for the home side. Sean Doherty was unlucky as he saw his header come back off the post. Sean Slaven came close to finding the back of the net as he used the wind to his advantage, attempting a long-range lob from his own half.

The team’s perseverance paid off as Ewan McPherson latched onto a fantastic ball from Max Gillies and grabbed his second goal of the afternoon, and most importantly, the winner for the home side.

The manager William Dyer, spoke after the game about the fantastic character of players: “To go down to ten men and still come away with the win says a lot about the character and resilience within the squad. We’ve got a strong group at the moment, and it’s a real pleasure to work with them.”

The Lie return on Saturday as we are on our travels again, as we face Hurlford United at Blair Park with the game kicking off at 2pm.
