Dunterlie Park, Barrhead
IT was a frustrating Saturday afternoon for Arthurlie as they were held to a draw by Kilbirnie at Dunterlie after being reduced to ten men.
Kilbirnie should have been in front on 14 minutes when a deep cross from the right found CJ Johnston in a central position 6-yards out, but the forward’s header was directed straight into the arms of Marc Waters.
Six minutes later Ryan Connelly had a similar chance for the visitors at the back post but again the effort was straight at Waters.
On 25 minutes, however, it was Arthurlie who were to take the lead, Mark Taylor poking in Sam Greenwood’s deflected shot from close range.
Taylor had a pop from range 5 minutes later, controlling a high ball with his right-foot before hitting it on the bounce with his left, but his ambitious effort sailed wide of the target.
It was only 3 minutes into the second half before Ladeside were level, Scott Lewis getting on the end of a through ball to round Waters and slot home.
On 55 minutes things got even worse for the home side, when Aaron Healy was shown a second yellow card for an innocuous challenge on John Tennant when he clearly won the ball.
Tam McGaughey was introduced on 62 minutes and 3 minutes later he looked to be dragged to the ground as he tried to get on the end of a ball over the top, but the referee ignored the home side’s appeals and waved play on.
With 7 minutes remaining Arthurlie had a glorious chance to take the lead when Tam McGaughey found Ross McKenzie in the middle but the forward’s effort went tamely into the arms of James McGowan.
Two minutes later they had an even better chance after McGaughey won a penalty, but Scott Anson’s drive from the spot was blocked by the leg of McGowan.
Despite having one less man, it was Arthurlie who looked the more likely winner but that penalty was the final clear cut chance and both sides had to make do with a point.
