IT was another big step for Arthurlie on Saturday in their bid for Premier Division survival, as Colin Reilly’s men claimed another three points when Kirkintilloch Rob Roy visited Barrhead.

Following a slow start to proceedings, the game finally sprung into life on 22 minutes when Max Kerr raced on to a crossfield pass from Jordan Leyden and burst past two defenders before being upended just inside the box.

After the referee had pointed to the spot, and some discussion with skipper Gary Carroll, Gary Smith stepped up to power home the penalty despite Kyle Aitken getting a hand to it.

Just one minute later, however, Arthurlie were reduced to ten men, Lewis Magee seeming a little unfortunate to see red for a high challenge on Kian Gilday.

With 4 minutes remaining of the first half Rob Roy were level, James Scott could only parry out a shot from distance and Derek McNab was on hand to head home the rebound.

The pace of play didn’t pick up much after half-time, but Arthurlie restored their advantage on the hour when Carroll watched Kevin Green and Dean Cairns collide with each other before running on to the loose ball and calmly slotting past Aitken with his left foot.

Five minutes later Dale Simeon almost added a third when he was played into space on the left of the box, but his left foot drive was well saved by Aitken in the away goal.

With 15 minutes to go Simeon again broke free and this time he was brought down by Aitken as he closed in on goal.

The referee again awarded ‘Lie a spot-kick and this time Leyden converted from 12 yards to make it 3-1.

Four minutes later, Scott was called into action to maintain the lead, saving with his feet from a James Barclay effort.

As the game headed into injury time the visitors were handed a lifeline with a bizarre penalty award after Lewis Warnock seemed to be fouled when challenging for a header.

McNab stepped up in search of his second goal of the game but his kick was well saved to his right by Scott.

It was the last meaningful action of a tight and tense affair and the ten men of Arthurlie held on for the vital win that moved them further clear of the relegation places.
