ARTHURLIE and East Renfrewshire rivals, St. Cadoc’s, served up a Saturday morning treat for the Dunterlie Park crowd as the Newton Mearns side ran out 3-2 winners on their first visit to the Barrhead ground.

If ‘Lie thought they were going to have a weekend stroll in this hastily arranged friendly against their first division opposition they knew different after only two minutes when the visitors had the ball in the net.

Ronan Sweeney was put in behind the Arthurlie defence with a clever pass, and the Saints forward side-stepped James Scott before slotting home.

The away side were dominating the early stages and only a brilliant double save by Scott stopped them doubling the lead following good work from Smart Osadolor.

As the half developed though, the home side came into things more, the game flowing end-to-end and Lewis Warnock coming closest to scoring with a header that was well saved by Kieran Hughes.

On the half-hour, however, St. Cadoc’s made it 2-0, Shaun Rodgers scoring with a brilliant free-kick from the edge of the box.

Alan Dunsmore had an effort saved by Hughes soon after the goal having been set up by Aaron Healy as ‘Lie looked to get back into the game.

And on 42 minutes they did manage to find a goal back, Healy again involved, setting up Gary Smith to score.

On 56 minutes Arthurlie levelled the scores after a slow start to the second half, Callum Shields heading home a cross from the left wing.

But the parity wasn’t to last long as on 65 minutes the visitors made it 3-2, Jamie Black scoring with an exquisite outside of the boot finish from around 25 yards.

And despite Arthurlie huffing and puffing in the closing stages that goal was to prove enough to give John Doyle’s men the victory.
